"It's The Most Wonderful Time of Year"! Camp starts on Monday, May 31, 2010. Hard to believe that it is already the most wonderful time of year (for camp) again -- it seems that we just packed up all of our equipment from our Expedition last summer!
As the new summer team begins to roll, fly, and jump in we can already see that it is going to be an outstanding summer. I believe the campers are in for a treat this year; so many talents, personalities, and experiences that culminate into a group of servants who are set to save souls, grow saints, and serve suffering humanity!
The theme for this year's team is "Rock of Ages" -- a familiar tune with a powerful message; Jesus is our ROCK... Jesus is our SALVATION... Jesus is our FOUNDATION... and Jesus is our PURPOSE. For this summer Christ is reminding us that HE is the ROCK and HE will not be shaken -- with a foundation of that caliber we are set to do great things for the Kingdom.
I recently had the opportunity to visit the ancient ruins of Nan Madol located on the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia -- this amazing and mysterious structure is constructed out of natural basalt "logs"; some are 30 feet long and weigh over 50 tons. Nan Madol provides the perfect illustration for our theme, "Rock of Ages" -- of course we know that Christ is our true rock of the ages! Nan Madol, while a mystery in many respects, has withstood many years and elements; you can see the strength and weight of the stones and the intricate construction for strength. Our 2010 summer staff manual is filled with several pictures of Nan Madol -- how appropriate for this summer!
In addition to Nan Madol we are using The Flintstones to create some fun as the summer team prepares for the campers that will bless Camp Homelani on June 11! We are thankful for the talents, time, and skill of the Bedrock Construction Company (a.k.a. Majors Randy and Jonnette Mulch) that has helped make another Camp Director's hair-brained idea come to life -- the creation of a Bedrock style backdrop is awesome and looks just like Bedrock! It is rocktastic!
We are excited to see what the Lord has in store for Camp Homelani this summer, the summer staff, and the campers. In a few short days the whole 2010 ohana (family) will be together and we cannot wait to get started building up that team, preparing all of the summer programs, putting the 2010 Jesus Walk together, and welcoming that first bunch of campers.
Please keep Camp Homelani and all of The Salvation Army's camp programs throughout The United States and around the world. Camp changes lives!
